Ardmillan

Ardmillan lies within easy reach of Haymarket to the southwest of the City Centre. It is a popular residential area with good amenities. There are a number of local shops and banks close by with larger supermarket type shopping available in Gorgie. The Fountainpark leisure complex, with its cinemas, restaurants, bars and gym, is just a short walk away whilst there are various parks and the Union Canal offering alternative recreational pursuits. The area is well served with bus routes to the City Centre and elsewhere and unmetered parking is available within walking distance.

Balerno

Balerno is a popular dormitory town to the south west of the City of Edinburgh. It enjoys a great community spirit, much of it centred around the excellent Balerno High School which provides a number of recreational facilities in addition to purely educational ones. There are also good primary schools and the town has a supermarket, bank, churches and a selection of local shops. Set at the foot of the Pentland Hills and with countryside surrounding, there are limitless opportunities for walking, riding and cycling literally on the doorstep.

Barnton

Barnton is a sought-after residential area lying to the northwest of the City. It is almost entirely residential in character although there are local shops and a bank serving the community. Both Cramond and Davidson’s Mains primary schools are in the area whilst the local secondary is Royal High School. There are many recreational opportunities with a selection of golf courses, many leafy walks and leisure facilities at Drum Brae. The area enjoys excellent transport links. There are various bus routes serving the City Centre and elsewhere, the airport is close at hand and the extensive road network to the west of Edinburgh is almost on the doorstep

Bellevue

Bellevue offers an excellent range of local amenities. There is a good selection of local shops including a Tesco supermarket all literally on the doorstep and within easy walking distance. Also nearby are several good restaurants and bars and the area is in easy reach of the City Centre and Princes Street either by the various local bus routes or indeed on foot. With the Water of Leith and Botanical Gardens nearby, there is no shortage of recreational amenity either.

Blackford

Blackford is an attractive residential suburb lying approximately 1 mile south of the Meadows and within easy reach of the City Centre. It is convenient for the University and both the old and new Royal Infirmary sites. There is a number of local shops in the vicinity whilst the Cameron Toll Centre is just a short bus or car journey away and, in fact, accessible on foot. There are various bus routes to the City Centre and elsewhere. Blackford Hill, with its Observatory and pleasant leafy walks, provides recreational opportunities and the Royal Commonwealth swimming pool is also close on hand.

Blackridge

Blackridge lies just off the M8 motorway to the west of Armadale where a good range of local amenities including schools is to be found. It enjoys excellent road links to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Livingston. There is a local health centre and childrens play park and open countryside around the village.

Boswall

The Boswall area is particularly convenient for access to the Western General Hospital, Telford College and only a short bus journey to Edinburgh City Centre.  Local convenience shopping includes a Safeway Superstore within comfortable walking distance on Ferry Road and a range of recreational pursuits in the vicinity include the Ainslie Park Leisure and Recreational Centre offering a variety of sporting activities.

Broomhouse

Broomhouse lies to the west of the City Centre and enjoys good local amenities.   It has schools, health centre and shops in the immediate vicinity with supermarkets available nearby at Chesser, Wester Hailes and Corstorphine.  The area is served by a number of bus routes to the City Centre, Gyle and Edinburgh Park.  There are also excellent road links via Calder Road to the City Bypass.

Brunstane

Brunstane lies at the eastern end of the city boundary between Joppa and Musselburgh. It is a pleasant area comprising generally residential property and with good local amenities. Almost on the doorstep are Ads and the Canard Park and Fort retail parks providing a comprehensive range of shopping facilities. There are also local shops and schools on hand with the King’s Manor Hotel close by. Transport links are excellent. The A1 and city Bypass are both within easy reach and Musselburgh offers frequent rail links to the centre of Edinburgh. Several bus routes serve the area. The East Lothian coast with its golf courses and beaches are also nearby.

Burdiehouse is on the southern outskirts of the City. It has a selection of local shops to meet daily requirements whilst Cameron Toll and Straiton shopping centres are within a short car journey away. There are schools within walking distance and Gracemount Leisure Centre offers a wide range of recreational amenities. Transport links are excellent. Several bus routes lead to the city centre and other areas and the City Bypass is just a couple of minute’s drive.

Calton

Calton forms part of the Georgian area of Edinburgh and is located at the east end of Princes Street and top of Leith Walk. It is accordingly within easy walking reach of all of Edinburgh’s famous attractions and amenities. It also has a range of local amenities with shops, banks, bars and restaurants. It enjoys excellent transport links to the city centre and elsewhere, including Leith and Holyrood. Port Seton and Cockenzie lie on the shore of the Firth of Forth and enjoy a full range of local amenities. There are primary and secondary schools serving the towns and a good range of shops. Colinton is one of Edinburgh’s most sought after residential areas, set in the southwest of the City in the shadow of the Pentland Hills. Colinton Mains is a popular residential area, set in the south-west of the City. It has a good range of local shops and local primary schools as well as health centre and churches. Comely Bank

Comely Bank is one of Edinburgh’s most popular residential areas located close to Stockbridge and within easy walking distance of the West End. It enjoys excellent local amenities with Safeway and Sainsbury nearby and a wide range of shops, pubs, banks and restaurants in Stockbridge. The Water of Leith walkway and Inverleith Park offer recreational facilities and there are good bus routes to the City Centre and elsewhere. Comiston

Comiston lies in the south of the city within easy reach of both the city Centre and the City Bypass. It is primarily a residential area with a good mix of private housing but it enjoys good local amenities. There is a selection of shops on the doorstep with a full range of shops, including Safeway, banks, bars, restaurants and a cinema available nearby in Morningside. Excellent bus routes with frequent services link the area to the City Centre and elsewhere. There are good local recreational amenities with lovely walks in the Hermitage of Braid, Braid Hills and Craiglockhart Hills. On–street parking is available.

Craiglockhart

Craiglockhart lies to the south-west of the City Centre and is predominantly residential in character. Whilst within easy reach of the West End by both bus and car, it is very much the leafy suburb. There are lovely walks to be had on Craiglockhart Hill and along the Canal towards Colinton Dell. In the immediate area, there is a good selection of local shops with Tesco at Colinton Mains providing more extensive shopping facilities. There is a couple of quiet pubs and for the more energetic Craiglockhart Sports and Tennis Centre is close at hand.

Crewe

Crewe Toll offers a good range of local amenities with Craigleith Retail Park and a Safeway store and primary and secondary schools in the area. It is within easy reach of the City Centre both by private transport and the many bus routes serving it. There are parks and a number of walk-/cycle-ways along disused railway lines. The Ainslie Park Leisure Centre offers a range of recreational pursuits.

Dalgety Bay

Dalgety Bay is a popular commuter town situated on the north shore of the Firth of Forth. It has undergone significant growth in recent years and benefits from a wide range of schooling, banking, medical, recreational and social amenities within the town or close by. It also enjoys excellent transport links. It is within a couple of miles of the M90 to the forth Road Bridge and points north and also of Inverkeithing Station. There is a local station in Dalgety Bay itself on the main north line. The golfing and other scenic attractions of the East Neuk of Fife may be found just along the coast.

Duddingston is in the east of Edinburgh and is a sought after area. It is almost exclusively residential in character and enjoys excellent amenities. There are good primary and secondary schools on the doorstep and excellent public and private transport links to the city centre. It is within easy reach of the City Bypass and A1. Newcraighall and Milton Road have a full range of major retailers providing an extensive range of shopping and there are local shops, banks and other facilities. From a recreational point of view, there are a number of golf courses in the area with a good network of walks and cycles along the many disused railway lines in the area. The beach at Portobello is also within easy reach.

East Calder lies just outside Livingston and forms the ideal base for commuting to there and to Edinburgh. It enjoys good road links to the Edinburgh city bypass and the M8 and is well paced for train stations serving, Edinburgh, Livingston and Glasgow. Markle

Markle lies between Haddington and East Linton, not far off the A1. To find it follow the turn-off from the A1 just east of Haddington signposted "Markle Fishery" and then follow all the signs for Markle until you cross the level crossing. Take the road first on the left after that to enter the steading. A full range of shopping, banking and recreational facilities are available in Haddington, North Berwick and Dunbar whilst the beaches of the East Lothian coastline and Lammermuir Hills are almost on the doorstep. The A1 provides excellent road links and there are stations nearby with services to Edinburgh and the South.

Marchmont is one of the most popular residential areas in the city, located just south of the Meadows and convenient for the University, Infirmary and the city centre. Mid Calder is located just outside Livingston which offers a full range of shopping, educational, recreational and social amenities. Musselburgh

Located approximately 6 miles east of Edinburgh and straddling the river Esk. The area has a long history beginning with a Roman fort at Inveresk and later the town itself, first named Eskmouth and later Musselburgh for the mussel bank at the mouth of the river Esk. Its nickname is 'the honest town'.

The Georgian New Town is world renowned and located right in the middle of Edinburgh close to the City Centre.  It comprises streets and crescents of immense character, many with attractive gardens. The Old Town is in the heart of Edinburgh occupying the hill between the Castle and Holyrood Palace. It is the historic part of Edinburgh but still very much a vibrant community and the focus of the International Festival. Located just ten miles from the city of Edinburgh, yet in the midst of lovely, unspoiled countryside, the town of Penicuik offers the modern family just about every social amenity and a wealth of sporting and recreational facilities. Pilrig

Pilrig is renowned and located in a sought after area close to Edinburgh City centre. It comprises streets and crescents of immense character, many with attractive gardens. It is extremely convenient for the many offices located in the centre of town. Almost on the doorstep is a wide selection of both multiple retailers and well known specialist shops. Prestonpans

Prestonpans lies to the east of Musselburgh on the Firth of Forth, part of the East Lothian coastline. It enjoys excellent local amenities with a supermarket and a good selection of other shops. There are both secondary and primary schools and first class leisure and recreational facilities. It has a station with regular services to Edinburgh, 14 minutes journey time away. The nearby A1 also gives good road access to Edinburgh and central Scotland. The beaches and seaside towns of East Lothian and its well renowned golf courses are also on the doorstep

Ratho

Ratho is a pleasant village lying to the west of Edinburgh and on the banks of the Union Canal. It has excellent local amenities with a primary school, post office and community centre. It lies within the catchment area of Balerno High School and has bus links to Edinburgh. Situated between the A8 and A71, it enjoys good transport links to Edinburgh and Central Scotland and is within an easy drive from the airport. There are many recreational opportunities available within the immediate area.

Sciennes

Sciennes is a popular residential area located just south of the Meadows and convenient for the University, Infirmary, Sick Kids Hospital and the city centre. It has a full range of local shops, banks and bars on the doorstep with more extensive facilities available at Cameron Toll and Morningside as well as in town. Recreational amenities are excellent with the Meadows nearby and the Commonwealth Pool within walking distance. There is a good selection of bus routes to the city centre and elsewhere and many places are within walking or cycling distance. Sciennes Primary and James Gillespie’s High Schools are both highly regarded.

Shandon

Shandon is a popular residential area of the City - within easy reach of the City Centre but enjoying a leafy tranquillity. It has a mix of house types with a selection of local shops serving day to day needs as well as a bank. Craiglockhart Primary School is in the heart of the area with both private and state secondary schools nearby. There are several bus routes to and from the City Centre. Craiglockhart Sports Centre is within walking distance, Harrison Park is on the doorstep and the Union Canal offers excellent recreational facilities for the walker or cyclist.

Sighthill

Sighthill offers a good range of local amenities. There are both primary and secondary schools within the area, the latter offering public swimming and recreational facilities.  The nearby Wester Hailes Shopping Centre has a wide range of shops and a multiplex cinema. There are excellent transport links with the City Bypass nearby, a station at Wester Hailes and a number of bus services.  The Pentland Hills and Union Canal walks provide the opportunity for getting out into the countryside.

Slateford

Slateford lies to the southwest of the centre of town and is served by a number of bus routes with good road links to the city centre and elsewhere. There is also a local station with services to Edinburgh and Livingston. There is a large Scotmid supermarket nearby at Chesser with a selection of local shops nearby. As well as a local primary school and park, Craiglockhart Sports Centre is a short drive away and there are interesting walks to be had along the Union Canal and Colinton Dell.

South Gyle is an increasingly popular residential area, located as it is close to the developing Edinburgh Park. There are excellent local amenities with the Gyle Shopping Centre within walking distance and bus routes to and from the city centre and the Gyle. Stockbridge is one of the most popular areas of Edinburgh with its central location and slightly Bohemian atmosphere. It has a large selection of shops to cater for all tastes and needs as well as excellent pubs, restaurants and cafes. Public transport is excellent with several bus routes serving the City Centre and elsewhere. Residents permit parking is available and with the Water of Leith walkway in particular, there are many opportunities for walking and other recreation activities.

Tranent

Tranent lies to the east of Edinburgh and is a self-contained town with a full range of local amenities. It has a selection of shops, banks and bars and both primary and secondary schools. There are excellent recreational facilities in the town whilst the East Lothian coast and Lammermuir Hills are almost on the doorstep. The A1 provides excellent transport links and there is a station nearby at Prestonpans. There are also several bus routes serving the town.

Trinity is an extremely popular residential part of the city, within easy commuting distance of both the City Centre and Leith by public and private transport. Viewforth

Viewforth has a selection of local shops with more extensive facilities available in Bruntsfield and Morningside. Within an easy walk there are bars. Restaurants, theatre and cinema. It is well served with bus routes to the city centre and elsewhere and schools within a short walking distance. There is a range of recreational facilities nearby including a tennis/bowling club, Craiglockhart Sports Centre, Fountainpark Leisure Centre and a number of walks/cycle routes, along the Union Canal and elsewhere.

Warriston

Warriston enjoys a fairly central location to the north east of the City Centre yet benefits from a quiet location adjacent to the Water of Leith. It has good amenities with a Tesco store in Canonmills, local shops in Ferry Road and at Goldenacre and more extensive shopping spread out along Ferry Road. The City Centre is within walking or cycling distance but there are also excellent bus links to the City Centre. Leith and elsewhere. Warriston is well placed for recreational amenities. As well as the Water of Leith walkway, it is at the heart of a number of paths/cycleways using the network of old railway lines in the area and the shore is within walking distance.

The West End is one of the most sought after residential parts of the New Town of Edinburgh. It generally comprises substantial Georgian buildings many built around crescents with gardens in the middle of them. It lies within just a few minutes walk from Princes Street and the heart of the City with all the amenities it has to offer. There is an unparalleled selection of restaurants, bars and social and recreational facilities close at hand with excellent public transport to other parts of the City and more distant. Many of Edinburgh ‘s famous landmarks are within easy reach.

West Pilton offers a good range of local amenities with a large Safeway store and secondary schools in the area and a primary school and health centre on the doorstep.   It is within easy reach of the City Centre both by private transport and the many bus routes serving it.  There are parks and a number of walk/cycle-ways along disused railway lines and the Ainslie Park Leisure Centre offers a range of recreational pursuits.

Westburn

Westburn lies on the western edge of the City and enjoys excellent local amenities. Westside Plaza shopping centre is a stone’s throw away and includes a multi-screen cinema. Wester Hailes Education Centre offers swimming and other recreational activities as well as educational ones. The area is served not only by a number of bus routes to the City Centre, the Gyle and other parts of the city but also by a train station. Newly re-opened, the Union Canal passes close by affording lovely walks into the countryside.

Wester Hailes

Wester Hailes lies towards the western periphery of the City and comprises a mix of residential house types. There is a large amount of new house building and refurbishment of housing stock going on within the area and many environmental improvements, including the reopening of the Union Canal. There are excellent amenities in the Westside Plaza Shopping Centre and multi-screen cinema complex. With a local trains station and a large number of bus routes serving the City Centre, Gyle and other areas, transport links are goo. The City Bypass is just a short drive away. Sighthill industrial estate nearby is home to many major employers in the city. There is a selection of both primary and secondary schools.

Willowbrae

Willowbrae is situated close to Holyrood Park and enjoys excellent local amenities. There is a selection of both primary and secondary schools within walking distance and local shops on the doorstep. Safeway is located a short distance away at Jock’s Lodge. Recreational facilities include Holyrood Park and a number of golf courses whilst Meadowbank Stadium is just a short journey away. The area is well served by public transport and there is a cycle route to the Centre of town.
